Episode 3 – “FISH FRIED IN THE OLD FIRST WARD” |
It’s Saint Patrick’s Day and Nelson gets lucky in Buffalo’s Old First Ward…discovering the consummate Irish meal at Gene McCarthy’s, Buffalo’s best fish fry at Swannie House, and the real Buffalo St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
All Access Pass is a monthly series that takes viewers “backstage” to experience Buffalo’s culinary treasures. Directed by filmmaker John Paget, and hosted by Buffalo’s own food fanatic and rock’n'roll raconteur Nelson Starr.

i could hear my arteries hardening as you guys wolfed down that fish fry. nice work. you have once again captured the essence of this place. my only fear is that you will kill these special places by making them too popular. boy that tim guy sure is the best.

Great show! You’ve captured the essence of the Old First Ward and the warmth of the people who live there. The Chamber of Commerce should add these shows to their website for a first hand look at the charm that is Buffalo.

One thing: no one from South Buffalo ever says “Old First Ward.” It is simply “The Ward.” Other than that, great show.

You should do an episode the area of South Buffalo around the Irish Center. There are lots of great bars & restaurants… Charlie O’Brien’s, Doc Sullivan’s, O’Daniels. Not to mention all the pizza places like Abbott, Imperial and Jo Jo’s.

These videos really underscore the unique personality of this town. As a transplanted west-coaster, I’m awestruck by the sheer number of community events and activities that pepper the whole western NY region…so much history and culture here! Well done sirs!

Another fine episode, Nelson.
I work within walking distance of “Schwannie” House, so we eat there quite a bit (also before Bison & Sabre games)and have enjoyed many a meal–the patio is especially nice. During the ’50s (& into the ’60s) Fish Fries used local Pike, but alas there are no longer enuf fish to satisfy us all. The Deerhead in Cheektowaga does however still use Pike for it’s weekly Fish Fries.
Looking forward to the “Pussywillow Day” show next.

Nice work! Really well executed, and makes me want to find this fish fry and eat it! Can’t wait for the next episode…

Wow! That was great. Actually brought a tear to my eyes. I can’t believe Margot is still at Swannie House…Peggy is still running the center and all those people still come out to celebrate the Old First Ward/Valley…
Thanks Nelson. I will pass this along to my family that are spread up and down the East Coast. I am sure it will bring back pleasant memories for them as well..
Your friend always,
Nancy

This is a charming story, well told and well shot. But I am Irish and I missed a little knuckle sandwich in there somewhere. This is all just a little too pleasant, for lack of a better word. A little more cowbell (and a few more ironic counterpoint cutaway shots, ala Paget of old) would be nice. But, like all of your work, it is engaging and a good story, well told.
Nuttin but love fer ya,
Marc

Nelson, great true buffalo food subject. My grandfather was a Bethelehen Steel Worker & fisherman. These places have alot of memories for me and the fam.
I have to say that one of my favorite fish fries come from an American Legion post that I’m a member of. I think most of the cooks are over 65. Yum.

Wow, this episode was fantastic! You remind me a lot of [a cooler version of] Rick Steves. I hope these videos get a wide distribution; they go way beyond just being about the food of Buffalo, and really portray the city and its people in a great light. I’m also really impressed by the production quality on what must be a pretty minimal budget.
Thanks, and I can’t wait to see episode 4.
